Hacks!

Although most of the thousands of hacks out there were produced by unscrupulous companies based outside the U.S. (such as Taiwan), those listed here are modern-day creations.  Some improve on the original, some detract from it, and some offer a unique experience on an old favorite.

Game Title Screen Shot Comments
Adventure + Here's a game we've always wanted to play a variation of. Variations aplenty here as you find yourself in a rather unfamiliar layout of this classic. By Steve Englehardt
Adventure 2 One of several "new" games that were included in Atari's Flashback 2 system, but in this case it's nothing more than hack of Adventure.
Alien Planet featuring Space Fury Guy While on vacation from conquering the universe, Space Fury Guy has crash landed on a strange alien planet. You must search the planet for the various parts to his A-2600 Dreadnaught Starship. Beware of alien life forms, some are deadly while others are merely bothersome creatures, like humans. Watch out for traps set by the inhabitants, and enjoy your stay on the alien planet!

Another fab Space Fury game by Scott Dayton.

AsterHawk Is it Asteroids? Space Hawk? Why NO! It's ASTERHAWK!
Asteroids Deluxe One of several "new" games that were included in Atari's Flashback 2 system, but in this case it's nothing more than hack of Asteroids, and a lousy one at that.
Berzerk (Voice-Enhanced) Whoa. Mike Mika got the game to TALK. Just like in the arcade! See for yourself.
Bazooka Bill Space Cavern variant by Scott Dayton.
Boring Donkey Kong

Boring Freeway

Boring Journey Escape

Boring Pac-Man

Boring Pitfall

Boring Taz

This is a humorous hack SERIES by Charles Morgan. In the hack of Donkey Kong with the barrels and flaming things removed. In short, it's hardly a game anymore. Boring Freeway features all of the cars and trucks removed. Boring Journey Escape has all of the "bad" sprites removed. The only real challenge now is getting the exit icon without missing it. Boring Pac-man has all of the ghosts removed. Boring Pitfall is not quite as boring as the other hacks since you still have a lot of the hazards to contend with. In short; the pits, water, and holes are still there. Boring Taz is missing the dynamite that usually kills Taz.
City Defender You don't often see US Games' M.A.D. modified, but this is a very nice update, one that fans of the game will certainly enjoy! By Scott Dayton
Combat (with Tank AI) Zach Matley wrote the AI for the tank in this interesting 1-player version of the tank battle from Combat.
Cosmic Bowling The original Atari version of Bowling was actually quite good if you could get around the color scheme - Scott Dayton revamps that by bringing the trendy night bowling to the 2600. You get to bowl like an alien too. Tell me that isn't cool.
Death Race Come on now... you've ALWAYS wanted to play this game, now you've got it! OK it may be a bit different than the way you remember it in the arcade, but if you remember Exidy's Death Race from the arcade, you're very old and it's possibly your memory is failing. Lovely hack by Scott Dayton.
DP Kong Featuring Space Fury Guy and Ms. Space Fury in a frantic battle against evil robots who may very well be Daleks! Watch out for Evil Otto, too. This is FULL SCALE ROBOT INVASION, folks. Excellent team effort by Scott Dayton, Keir Howell and Scott Stilphen.
DP X-mas Space Fury Guy and Ms. Space Fury are BACK in Scott Dayton's Christmas version of Donkey Kong. Watch out for deadly ornaments and a very mean snowman!
Dragster (with automatic shifting) Ever wonder what it would be like to have the Dragster shift when it's supposed to? Kinda takes the fun out of the game but an interesting lesson if nothing else! By Thomas Jentzch.
E.T. 2 E.T. with hacked pit sizes (Scott Stilphen)
E.T. The Extra Testicle X-Rated E.T.(Christian Samuel)
Hanged Man If they had to tools back then that we have now... the game might look more like Scott Dayton's vision.
Helloween A slight change of scenery for Pitfall fans, as Harry is now an eyeball-headed explorer in a spooky Halloween forest. By Keith Erickson.
Invasion Another terrific update to a vintage title, courtesy of Scott Dayton.
Jungle King Jess Ragan modifies the Jungle Hunt game back to its roots, with the Jungle King logo and character.
Moby Blues A hack of Mario Bros, "New Freaks" and Alien but for God's sake... DON'T TOUCH THE ANIMALS! (Angelo Jocattolo)
Nitemare Pinball A new take on the classic Video Pinball. Play it in a dark room! It's damned scary. (Scott Dayton)
Pac-Man (hack) Hacked to perfection by Rob Kudla
Paczerk Voice Enhanced

or

Paczerk Voice Enhanced (w/extra wall gaps)

Scott Dayton's merger of two classics. Plays like Berzerk (with Mike Mika's excellent voice enhancement) but with Pac-Man as the humanoid, ghosts as the robots, and Ms. Pac-Mah as Evil Otto.
Pitfall (with unlimited lives) If you suck at Pitfall but want to play through to the end, here's your chance. You never run out of lives in this hack!
Planet Invaders A hack of Atari's Space Invaders in which the aliens have been replaced with the symbols for the planets. (Charles Morgan)
Pong 2.0 Looking for the "next best thing" after mastering Pong, ya wacko? How about this lovely isometric version, Pong 2.0? Cool stuff by Scott Dayton.
Poseidon The King of the Sea versus verious nasty sea creatures in this Demon Attack hack by Scott Dayton.
Return to Haunted House One of several "new" games that were included in Atari's Flashback 2 system, but in this case it's nothing more than hack of Adventure by Tony Wong, using Steve Engelhardt's Create Your Own Adventure program.
Space Duel One of several "new" games that were included in Atari's Flashback 2 system, but in this case it's nothing more than hack of Asteroids, and a lousy one at that.
Space Invaders (hack) Hacked to perfection by Rob Kudla
Space Invaders: Invasion Megamania never gets old... check out this fusion of Megamania and Space Invaders by hackmeister Scott Dayton.
Tanks DX A hack of Zimag's Tanks But No Tanks which makes the tanks look more like the ones in Atari's Combat. (Charles Morgan)
TP-Bug A hack of Atari's Pac-man which changes Pac-man into an insect and the ghosts into rolls of toilet paper. (Charles Morgan)
UFO #6 A hack of Atari's Pepsi Invaders which changes the PEPSI into some aliens and gives the cannon some wheels. (Charles Morgan)
Vector Space Invaders Is this the Vectrex version of the classic arcade game? Nope, just a unique graphic update courtesy of Scott Dayton.
Vector Vaders Not another Space Invaders mod, but rather an update to Megamania, bringing the Space Invaders universe to the Activision classic. By Scott Dayton.
Ventrra Invaders 2002 A hack of Activision's Megamania which changes it's enemies into enemies from various incarnations of Space Invaders. (Charles Morgan)
Water War Play Asteroids UNDER WATER! Scott Dayton seems to have a thing for turning space themes into underwater themes... hell, it seems to work!
Wolfenstein 2600 Before Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein was 3D, and before Wolfenstein was 3D, it was 2D. But after ALL of that, it was converted to the Atari 2600, the logical last step in any decent franchises' history. Enjoy this Scott Dayton creation!
Xaxyrax Road A hack of Activisoin's Freeway which changes the cars into smiley's and the chicken into a frog. (Charles Morgan)
X-Wing Scott Dayton's unique perspective on the Space Battle game... set in a Star Wars galaxy!
Yars' Return One of several "new" games that were included in Atari's Flashback 2 system, but in this case it's nothing more than hack of Yars' Revenge and a lousy one at that.
Zero Patrol A hack of Atari's Moon Patrol which changes the moon buggy into a pink shoe and the other enemies into things like: A's, bowls with straws, helicopters, etc. (Charles Morgan)
